The Benefits of Reiki Therapy in Integrative Medicine

Reiki is a complementary health practice where practitioners lightly place their hands on or just above an individual, aiming to direct energy to aid the person’s self-healing process. It has been effective in supporting (not a cure) with virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect as it works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. It is founded on the Eastern concept of an energy that underpins the body’s inherent healing capabilities. Like the Western concept that stress can inhibit a person’s healing ability, if the aforementioned energy is “low”, then the person is more likely to fall ill or struggle in recovery.

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind, and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and wellbeing.

Its use is not dependent on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully not only experienced by but taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

Reiki has different styles of healing modalities and is believed to have been around for thousands of years. After WW2, the Usui method became popular in the West after being brought over by Hawayo Takata, a skeptic who was impressed by the results of the treatments she was receiving for a medical condition. After failing to prove that the practitioner was secretly using devices, and subsequently healing from her condition, she became a Reiki Master in February 1938 and established several clinics in Hawaii before travelling to the mainland to teach.

Fast forward to present day, The International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) teaches Usui and Tibetan styles of Reiki and has reincorporated the Japanese Reiki style left out by Mrs. Takata into Usui Reiki. There are currently four levels taught by ICRT: I, II, Master, and Karuna.

Supportive research abounds and advocates for Reiki in the integrative space. Reports on Reiki treatment vary, ranging from achieving a more relaxed state to facilitate the body’s natural healing abilities and improved rest to alleviating pain and accelerating recovery and rehabilitation. Many clients have reported the soothing emotional effects of Reiki and an overall feeling of tranquility. The potential benefits derived from this practice seem almost limitless, including calming effects during pre- and post-surgery, reducing the unpleasant side effects of anesthesia or chemotherapy, supporting those in Anxiety or PTSD therapies, combating the effects and injuries from sports, aiding in weight-loss journeys, managing workplace stress and life changes, or even breaking free from poor habits.
